  • Self-Control Outdoes Intelligence? (Psychology, Motivation, Self-discipline)

A few years ago, many researchers were in agreement: By far the most important requirement for education and vocational success is a high mental capacity (intelligence). However, even the best intelligence tests can not explain all variance in life success. Every once in a while a highly intelligent student gets dropped out of the education system without finishing (underachiever), whereas another student who scored below average in an intelligence test, ends up with a fantastic academic career (overachiever). Recent studies (e.g. Duckworth & Seligman, 2005; Moffitt et al 2011) suggest that such "irregularities" mainly come about due to the factor of self-control (also: self-discipline, perseverance). Amazingly, in some studies self-discipline proved to be a better predictor than intellige...

In essence, self-discipline is about handling temptations so you can get a bigger reward in the future. The better you get at saying no to short-term, little rewards at the expense of more substantial delayed gratification, the more self-disciplined you become. One of the best self-discipline exercises is to do it now. Imagine you have finished eating your dinner. You look at the dishes that need washing and say to yourself, “I want to finish watching my TV series. I’ll wash them later.” Stop! Do it now. By overcoming the temptation to get a small reward now (watching your series) you forgo a bigger reward – watching your series without the unpleasant thought in the back of your mind that you still have to do the dishes. Whenever a similar situation arises, always choose to do the unpleasant thing first to train yourself to immediately act in spite of temptations. Do you need to make an unpleasant call? Do it now and be done with it. Don’t feel like working out? Change into your workout clothes and go to the gym right away. Tempted to call it a day before finishing your most important task? Get it done now and have peace of mind. The more often you repeat the simple behavior of doing unpleasant things immediately, the more automated your response will get. Soon, you’ll train yourself to choose delayed gratification over little immediate rewards.
